Intercostal Neuralgia
Intercostal neuralgia is a condition characterized by pain along the intercostal nerves, which run beneath the ribs and wrap around the chest wall. It typically presents as sharp, burning, or shooting pain along the rib cage, often worsened by deep breathing, coughing, twisting, or movement of the torso. Common causes include rib injury or fracture, post-surgical nerve damage (such as after thoracic or breast surgery), shingles (post-herpetic neuralgia), or nerve compression. Because the pain can mimic cardiac or lung-related conditions, it’s important to rule out other causes before diagnosis. With targeted treatments such as nerve blocks, radiofrequency ablation, and medication, intercostal neuralgia can be effectively managed to relieve pain and restore comfort.
NON SURGICAL TREATMENT OF INTERCOSTAL NEURALGIA
Non-surgical treatment of intercostal neuralgia aims to relieve pain along the rib cage while restoring comfortable breathing and movement. Treatment often starts with nerve-stabilizing medications, anti-inflammatory agents, or muscle relaxants to reduce pain and irritation around the affected nerve. Intercostal nerve block injections provide targeted, fast-acting relief by numbing the specific nerve causing pain, and can also help confirm the diagnosis. For longer-lasting relief, radiofrequency ablation may be used to disrupt pain signals from the affected nerve. Pulsed radiofrequency therapy offers a gentler alternative that calms the irritated nerve without damaging surrounding tissue. Topical treatments such as lidocaine patches can further help manage localized pain. Breathing exercises and posture correction also support recovery by reducing strain on the chest wall, allowing most patients to find effective relief without surgery.
